Bangladesh is largely dependent on the readymade garments (RMG) sector. The country’s export earnings from the apparel sector registered an 8.76 per cent growth reaching $30.61 bn in FY18, thanks to safety improvements. The apparel industry, employer of 40 mn workers, mostly rural women, contributed 83.49 per cent to Bangladesh’s total exports of $36.66 bn to date.

According to Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data, Bangladesh’s export earnings from the RMG sector stood at $30.61bn, posting 8.76 per cent growth in the last fiscal year. The figure is 1.51 per cent higher than the target of $30.16 mn for FY18.In FY17, Bangladesh’s export earnings registered a 0.2 per cent growth to $28.15 bn, the lowest in the last one and a half decade.Of the total amount, Knitwear products earned $15.18 bn, which is 10.40 per cent higher than the $13.76 in the same period a year ago. Woven products earned $15.42 bn, up by 7.18 per cent, compared to $14.39 bn a year ago. Meanwhile, country’s overall export earnings rose about 5.8 per cent to $36.66 bn, which was $34.65 bn in Fy17.

With the huge growth and success in this sector little effort has been put into action on the printing of the exported knitwear. Currently, being one of the largest exporters of knit garments in the world, Bangladesh lacks grip on the printing solutions required for this industry to generate more revenue. The raw materials of these textiles printing, like the printed cloth materials come directly from abroad. A lot of orders are refused every year as Bangladesh lacks the technology and skilled manpower required to textile printing in Bangladesh. Due to this absence of solution providers in textile printing industry, Bangladesh now imports products and printing solutions from China and India, as they are the regional leaders in this industry. Even there is no single printing studio in Bangladesh to support manufacturers to get hands on experience on printing products.

Bangladesh loses a fair amount of revenue every fiscal year due to high processing and importing charges to import printing solutions from abroad. Currently only a mere percentage of companies in Bangladesh provide textile printing solutions with their quality of work still well below global standard. Considering the huge scope of business, some of these regional leaders have shown interest to provide end-to-end printing solution service with a set-up of world class printing studio in the Bangladeshi textile printing sector. This can be a mutually beneficial relationship for the both the Bangladeshi RMG industry and the printing solution providers as the scope of business will add another jewel in the crown of the already booming RMG industry of Bangladesh.

Looking at the growing prospects, and to provide everything under one roof, Print Tech Expo and GarTex Expo were organised recently in Dhaka Bangladesh. Exhibitors’ feedback…

Shahnewaz Chowdhury Manager Director, NAF Overseas (Pvt)

We got a lot of enquiries about printing & MS machines from this expo. This product is from Italy & they are the number one in the world for digital textile printing. As this is a new concept for Bangladesh, people are really curious to know about digital textile printing, its process and how different is it from traditional printing.

This year at this exhibition we have achieved better response than last year. So, we expect that business wise next year will be great for us.

Monirul Alam Sr. General Manager, Dysin Chem Ltd

This is our first time in this expo. We are here with some innovative product especially for printing. We have been dealing with leather market with our existing product so far. We are introducing ourselves in printing this time & we are getting very good response. We are showing them some new printing techniques like transfer which will give photo like pictures for leather & it’s very easy to use.

We got good feedback for our unique ideas. I think it will open a new era for footwear industry to going towards colourful printing. We are offering from training to all kind of solution as well as producing for them. We are optimistic for 2019 because the footwear industry is in preliminary stage in Bangladesh & its growing very fast.

Anowar Sadat Country Manager, DCC Print Vision LLP

We are mostly involved in providing textile printing solutions. DCC in collaboration with EPSON has launched Monna Lisa Evo-Tre, a remarkable digital textile inkjet printer to cater various printing

requirement of the industry.

We have an EPSON sublimation printing machine, model F9270 here. We provide total solution for decorative fabric printing for textile, garment, fashion apparel, sportswear, home textile and soft signage textile digital printing.

This time we witnessed fewer but quality visitors coming to the show. However, overall response had been below our expectations.

A Muntaqim (Munna) Managing Director, Jack Bangladesh Ltd.

Jack is always booming in the market all over the world. We always get good response from the events everywhere. As you know we are specialist for sewing machines so we are participating in the expo with few products like single needle plain machine, over lock machine with auto trimmer etc.

Overall response was OK, however we could have got more clients if the weather would have been better.

H M Al-Bironi, In-charge, Signtronix

Overall response is very good. Though first day it was disappointing due to rain, but during next two days we had enough visitors’ footfall. We have come here with signage machineries & direct textile printer

which prints on fabrics like cotton & also polyester like dye-chem machine printer.

And this time we are also introducing Mimaki printers for the first time in Bangladesh. This machine is only used for T-shirt & shirts. We have performed very well so far and hopefully will be achieving our target level in future.

Md. Nahida Islam
Director, Tetra Technology Ltd

We got fewer responses this time when compared to previous year. Moreover, the weather is also a fact for less visitors’ turnout. We are offering 10 per cent-20 per cent discount on our products for the xpo, which depends on the client. In terms of business, we are not doing as good as 2017 in 2018.

Financial & political scenario could be a reason for the same. We are planning to add more product lines to our business as well as change the product price in the future to avoid this situation. Hopefully, it will work & we will get better response in 2019.

M Mariful Islam Head of Marketing, Ali Group

We are the largest manufacturer & inventor of packaging machineries in Bangladesh. There was a lot of visitor in the expo. As an exhibitor we are satisfied with the response. But this industry needs more investor. So, we expect more investor here.

If I compare, we have grown since 2017. It’s not because of the market; it is because of our effort & quality. Now clients come to us for our products. Right now we are working on the automated production line. So, in 2019 we are highly focused for 1 or 2 automated production line.

G Muthusamy
Global Softwares

In terms of feedback we got enough response to promote our business here. We could have got better response, if it wasn’t raining. We are offering software services for apparel & textile industry. We have been doing this business only in India so far.

But this year we decided to promote our software in Bangladesh also. Today most of the companies are using some kind of software, but we hope to replace all kinds of software’s with ours in near future.

Monjurul Hoque Senior Manager, TUV Rhineland

We got to meet new manufacturers & clients in this expo. We are learning about their requirements & they are also showing interest to work with us. So, we are getting very good feedback. Basically, footwear & leather exporters need our services. Right now we are offering physical & chemical test facilities for leather & footwear.

And on top of that, we also provide compliance audit like BSCI, SEDEX as per country regulation & requirement. Recently we also have added waste water testing which is related with ETP plant. So any leather & footwear manufacturer who has the ETP plant waste water management, we can support them by zero discharge hazardous chemical as per the 20-20 vision. We can help them with waste water testing as well as footwear testing. To be honest, in 2017, we were not focused on footwear. But we have started our activities this year & hope to close this year by achieving our target.
